Woman threatens uni staff with knife DOMINGO ACCUSED OF HARASSMENT

- TAMARA McDONALD

A DEAKIN University student was arrested after allegedly threatening staff while armed with a knife at the waterfront campus yesterday.

The 25-year-old Geelong woman became involved in an argument with staff and authorities were notified, Victoria Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said.

The woman was interviewed and issued with a $1000 fine for possessing a controlled weapon. Police continue to investigate the incident.

Deakin’s chief operating officer, Kean Selway, said the student was allegedly behaving in a threatening way towards several Deakin staff in Student Central.

“The staff involved acted in an exemplary way,” Mr Selway said. “They are physically OK, but are of course shaken and receiving the appropriate care and support.

“Victoria Police attended quickly, safely arrested the person and are now investigating the matter.”

Deakin was assisting police with their inquiries, Mr Selway said.

“Deakin has communicated with its students and staff to reinforce that the waterfront campus is safe and that security officers are on duty 24/7.” OPERA singers have accused celebrated opera star Placido Domingo of sexual harassment, saying he dangled roles for sex.

Numerous women have told The Associated Press that Domingo tried to pressure them into sexual relationships by dangling jobs and, in some cases, punishing them when they refused his advances.

Six others said that suggestive overtures by him had made them uncomfortable.

One accuser said Domingo stuck his hand down her skirt and three others said he forced wet kisses on their lips — in a dressing room, a hotel room and at a lunch meeting.

Almost three dozen more people in the opera world said they witnessed inappropriate sexually tinged behaviour by him and that he pursued younger women with impunity.

Domingo called the allegations “deeply troubling and, as presented, inaccurate”.

“Still, it is painful to hear that I may have upset anyone or made them feel uncomfortable — no matter how long ago and despite my best intentions,” he said. “I believed that all of my interactions and relationships were always welcomed and consensual.”

Seven of the nine accusers said their careers were adversely impacted after rejecting Domingo’s advances, with some saying roles he promised never materialised.
