Giant split talk untrue – coach

- ADRIAN WARREN

GWS coach Leon Cameron has hit back at claims Giants football boss Wayne Campbell has strained relationships with key players and staff members that threaten his tenure.

Fox Sports reported on Monday communication issues and the club’s poor recent player retention would likely lead to Campbell’s departure.

“He’s contracted to the end of next year, like I am, and he’s rock solid at our footy club,” Cameron said.

“He’s been fantastic. We’ve got a great relationship, the players have got a great relationship so it was bit of a surprise from left field last night.

“But after I read it, I thought most of it is just totally untrue.”

He said he had broached the matter with Campbell.

“We said, ‘where has this article come from?’ because it was a genuine surprise,” Cameron said.

“Our performance on the weekend was unacceptable and no doubt when you have a bad performance people are going to try to pick at your footy club.”

Coming off a bad loss to Hawthorn, he expects GWS to be up for the fight against the in-form Western Bulldogs at Giants Stadium on Sunday.

Cameron was adamant that although Stephen Coniglio had yet to sign, the matter was not causing any angst at the club.

The injured midfielder has been linked a to a number of Victorian clubs, but Cameron said Coniglio was still heavily invested in GWS and looking to return from his knee injury in time to play in the finals.

‘We had a meeting with our entire group yesterday after our review and Stephen Coniglio was front and square and was probably our most vocal,” he said. “We talk about his injury and his rehab, he’s in a really good frame of mind.

“He’ll spend time with his family and his friends, but I don’t see any indication it’s going to go against the Giants.”
