Hundreds of golfers ready for carnival

- HARRISON TIPPET

ALMOST 1000 golfers are expected to hit the links at Portarlington next week for the 22nd annual Carnival of Golf.

The Portarlington Golf Club is preparing to welcome the hundreds of golfers to the 10-event carnival, kicking off on Saturday with a 36-hole Men’s Championship.

Club pro Matt Milne said everything was ready to go for the carnival. “The course is in good shape and we’ve got pretty much a full field for most of the events,” Milne said. “We’ve got probably over 900 golfers for the week playing.

“Preparations are all fairly smooth — the entries always come in really early because people are keen to play.”

The annual carnival was one of the club’s two “signature events” Milne said, along with the much-loved pro-am held in February — where an incredible 220 players took part this year.

“I suppose the carnival is the highlight for the amateur golfers, it drags people from interstate, from Melbourne, down the south western districts and everywhere else,” Milner said.

“It’s not just a good thing for the club, it’s a good thing for the township and the community in Portarlington. We bring this many people in to play the course and enjoy what Portarlington has to offer.”

The Bellarine Women’s Open Championship will be held next Tuesday, while a series of men’s and women’s Stableford and Ambrose events will also be held, with more than $15,000 up for grabs throughout the week.
