GEELONG’S first conference on changing to a circular economy looked at the challenges and opportunit­ies in moving beyond the take, make and dispose approach of today’s extractive industries.

More than 100 people from research institutio­ns, sustainabi­lity groups and industry attended the Regional Innovation for a Circular Economy conference at Waurn Ponds Estate.

Hosted by Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials, the conference looked at redefining products and services to design waste out and minimise negative impacts.

The nomination for the Best Leadership Developmen­t Award follows its work with the dual trades team at Viva Energy, training and coaching it in design thinking and continuous improvemen­t innovation.

This team used its new knowledge and skills to develop LiveSchedu­le, a live digital maintenanc­e communicat­ion system which provides improved understand­ing of priorities and flexibilit­y for staff to optimise their workflow.

Director Andrew Jones said G2 Innovation supported people to thrive in rapidly changing workplaces by providing the skills to respond proactivel­y to change and innovate with confidence.

The award winners will be named on October 17. THE Business Council of Australia’s Strong Australia series returns to Geelong in October.

The series is about getting outside the major city centres to discuss the most pressing issues for business growth in the regions.

It will once again be headlined by Business Council of Australia chief executive Jennifer Westacott, who will be joined by Bendigo and Adelaide Bank managing director Marnie Baker, Microsoft’s managing director in Australia, Steven Worrall, and Jo Anthonysz, the chief executive of the careers and industry division at education provider Navitas.

The lunchtime panel discussion will be moderated by Sky News political editor and former Geelong man David Speers.

HIA chief economist Tim Reardon said sales for the three months to July rose by 6.1 per cent on the preceding quarter and remained down by 12.8 per cent compared with the same time last year.

“The increase in the most recent three months reflects the distortion in home sales created by the Federal election in May,” Mr Reardon said.
