Ammos no match for Seagulls

- ALEX OATES

GEELONG Amateur coach Kane Tenace has implored his young team to “move on” in the wake of Saturday’s 89point drubbing at the hands of Barwon Heads.

The minor premiers were no match for the Seagulls in the second semi-final at Portarlington’s Ron Evans Oval, belted after half-time and forced into a preliminary final.

“We weren’t expecting that,” Tenace said after the 23.10 (148) to 9.5 (59) loss, where his side was blown away in an eight-goal-to-one third term.

“We know we’ve got to play our best footy to compete with Barwon Heads and we just didn’t do it.

“We played them a couple of weeks ago and they got a hold of us pretty similar to what they did today.

“We know that if we weren’t at our best, they’re a very good football side. We were expecting it to be a lot more competitive than that.”

Beaten by Barwon Heads by 41 points just a fortnight ago in Round 18, Ammos again had their colours lowered.

“It was fairly frustrating,” Tenace said.

“In the first half we did a lot right but we had lapses in concentration which meant they were able to transition the ball a lot easier than they should have been.

“For the first half, there were patches of the game where they were better than us and we had enough of the ball to be close at half-time, but then they got a hold of us.”

Having lost just four matches in the home-and-away season, Tenace conceded Saturday’s rout was one of his side’s worst in 2019.

But he was not prepared to dwell on the performance, with the performances of Brad Surkitt and Brad King among the rare highlights.

“We have had a really good year, and as I said to the boys, we finished on top for a reason,” Tenace said.
