Skill errors bundle out Anglesea

- ALEX OATES

ANGLESEA coach Paul Nigro was left to lament a series of fundamental skill errors as his side crashed out of the BFL premiership race.

The ’ Seas were inaccurate in front of goal, missing a host of shots as Torquay inflicted a third-straight win over its coastal rivals to move through to Saturday’s preliminary final.

“We probably played our equal worst game of the season in a final,” Nigro said.

“We’ve got to sit on that for quite a number of months. Whilst we’re disappointed with today, we’re happy with the year as a whole. We were a game off finishing on top and things didn’t go our way in the last game of the year. We’ve won a final and lost a final, so it’s certainly been a positive year in that respect. It’s important we stick together, stay tough on and off the field.”

In a tight opening quarter, it was Torquay that made the most of limited chances in front of goal to trail by just three points.

“I thought it was fairly even early but we missed a couple of opportunities and it put us on the back foot a little bit,” Nigro said.

“Even at half-time I felt we’d played pretty well, but the scoreboard didn’t reflect that. Then Torquay produced a pretty good third quarter of footy. They just showed us a clean pair of heels and we’re pretty disappointed. We’ve let ourselves down a couple of times against Torquay this year.”

Nigro admitted that the wasted chances had an effect on the playing group.

“You speak about finals footy and opportunities are there and you’ve got to take those opportunities,” Nigro said. “Little things can often be big things as the game wears on. I think those early misses, and there’s no individual blame, but we weren’t clean with the footy either compared to last week. We’ll look back at that as to why.”
