All smiles as Innes finally takes carnival title

-

MICK Innes struck out in style, winning the 36-hole Carnival of Golf event on Saturday with a score of 153 off the stick at Portarlington Golf Club.

Innes blitzed the course on the first 18 with a score of 74 and followed through with 79 on his second trip around.

The Buninyong golfer, with a plus-one handicap, has had several attempts at winning the championship and was glad to finally take out the title.

He was also happy to take the crown from last year’s victor, Matt Ryan, also from the Ballarat region, who put in an impressive score this year with a solid 156.

Second was Jason Johnson — the former Essendon footballer — who went around in 154, showing he has got what it takes with his footy studs off and golfing spikes on.

Portarlington locals Phillip Toyne and Gavin Whyley were first and second respectively in the nett event, with Toyne getting over the line with 149 off a countback.

Young Portarlington hopeful Max Edmanson was among the leaderboard after the first 18 with an outstanding 75 before the cold and flu medicine wore off.

The course was presented in immaculate condition by course superintendent Steve Burchett for the 36-hole championship event, which attracts top golfers from across the region.

A total of 104 players took to the course for Sunday’s mixed four-ball event, with Sue and Craig Plummer, from Portarlington, coming out on top with an impressive 46.

The Carnival of Golf continues to welcome about 1000 golfers for the week to Portarlington, from all across Australia.

It finishes on Friday with the two-person Ambrose event.
