Hendo all set for $207k new role

DEFEATED MP Sarah Henderson is expected to be sworn in as Victoria’s newest senator by the end of this week.

Ms Henderson, who was dumped by Corangamit­e voters just four months ago, won a bitter Victorian Liberal Party preselecti­on fight for the prized spot.

The former ABC journalist defeated Greg Mirabella, husband of former Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella, with 234 votes to 197 on Sunday in a tightlyfou­ght contest.

Despite being rejected by voters at the ballot box, Ms Henderson will receive a bumper salary of $207,100 as a senator — more than two-anda-half times the average Victorian wage of $80,610.

Following her preselecti­on, Ms Henderson was yesterday endorsed by the Liberal Party’s administra­tive committee.

A joint sitting of the Victorian parliament will take place tomorrow night to confirm the appointmen­t.

After her win, Ms Henderson thanked Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Deputy Liberal Leader Josh Frydenberg for their support, promising to “hit the ground running” and be a “strong Liberal voice for all of Victoria”.

Ms Henderson yesterday between 8pm and 8am in restricted periods, and creating a “horse zone” along a stretch of beach west of 13th Beach Surf Club.

Senators are elected for sixyear terms with half of them elected every three years.

The City of Greater Geelong will vote tonight on a recommenda­tion to launch a community engagement process to establish if there’s support for the proposed changes.
