MUM ROBBED, STABBED

TERRIFYING HOME INVASION: Woman in house with three kids attacked trying to stop thieves

A GEELONG mother was stabbed in a terrifying home invasion while her three children slept just metres away.

The woman, 31, woke about 2am yesterday to find two men in her Wandana Heights home.

The pair attempted to steal the woman’s bag and car keys when she confronted them. One of the men then lashed out at her with a knife.

Geelong detective Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie said the woman suffered stab wounds to her shoulder and hand.

The men fled the scene in the woman’s white Volvo and are still at large.

“It’s just terrifying, isn’t it — to be woken up in the early hours of the morning knowing that you’ve got children in the house and there’s people inside your house,” Sen-Sgt Guthrie said.

A GEELONG mother was stabbed in a violent home invasion while her three young children slept metres away in their beds.

The 31-year-old woman was stabbed after she confronted the intruders in her Wandana Heights home.

The Geelong Advertiser understands the pair, believed to be in their late teens, attempted to steal the woman’s bag and car keys when she grabbed one of the offenders.

Police were called to the address just after 2am yesterday.

The two alleged offenders remained on the run last night.

Geelong detective Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie said the woman suffered from stab wounds to her shoulder and hand.

“The lady, in the early hours of this morning, heard some noise and she’s got up and observed these two males, as she has described to us, trying to leave her house,” Sen-Sgt Guthrie said.

“She’s confronted them and from there she’s sustained a minor stab wound to her finger and shoulder. We believe it is some sort of small knife at this stage.”

The offenders fled the scene in the woman’s white Volvo which has the registration number XVF 837.

Sen-Sgt Guthrie said the attack was concerning as the woman had three young children asleep in the house.

“It’s just terrifying, isn’t it — to be woken up in the early hours of the morning knowing that you’ve got children in the house and there’s people inside your house,” he said.

“It’s an extremely desperate act.”

The woman was taken to Geelong hospital in a stable condition for treatment.

The violent attack follows a string of home invasions across the region in the past week, including an aggravated burglary at a Torquay home on Friday and a stabbing at a Thomson residence earlier last week.

Sen-Sgt Guthrie urged residents to never “confront” offenders as the consequences could be deadly.

“A car can be replaced — lives can’t be,” he said.

Crime statistics show there have been 208 aggravated burglaries in Geelong from March 2018-19 — about on par from the previous year.

Opposition Police spokesman David Southwick said the recent criminal incidents in Geelong follow the release of a national survey, which revealed 40 per cent of Victorians identify crime as their biggest concern.

Police Minister Lisa Neville said it must have been a “terrifying experience” for the Wandana Heights woman.

“My thoughts are with those impacted,” she said.

“Victoria Police are investigating and I have every confidence that they will bring the perpetrators to account,” she said.

Sen-Sgt Guthrie said the white Volvo had not yet been sighted. If anyone sees the car, they are urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
