Grandpa accused of drug dealing

A NORLANE grandfather charged with trafficking ice has been granted bail after his elderly father offered up a $20,000 surety.

Officers claim 67-year-old Radomir Vasic was asleep in his car behind the Donnybrook Rd shops — an area they say is a known drug hot spot — when patrolling police tried to wake him.

Police prosecutor, Leading Senior Constable Jacki Davis, told the court police allegedly found a set of scales and cash in Mr Vasic’s car.

It is alleged another officer saw the man put his arm over the fence and found a bag of drugs nearby. “Two other officers heard a noise … (they saw) this accused’s arm coming back from the fence,” SenConstable Davis said.

The prosecutor said the bag contained 10 grams of a white substance believed to be methamphetamine. The court was told it was more than three times the trafficable amount of ice.

Mr Vasic — who fronted Geelong Magistrates’ Court charged with drug trafficking, drug possession and dealing with proceeds of crime — was arrested at the scene and remanded in custody on August 22.

During the bail application Sen-Constable Davis argued Mr Vasic would be at risk of reoffending if released and urged Magistrate Mark Stratmann to remand him in custody.

But Mr Vasic’s lawyer, James Westmore, argued that his client should be released because he had a stable address and was the sole carer for his sick, elderly father.

Mr Westmore said Radomir Vasic’s son had to take on caring responsibilities for Mr Vasic Sr while the accused was locked up, which he said had a significant impact on the younger man’s life.

Mr Vasic Sr offered a $20,000 surety to the court if his son was bailed — a factor accepted by Mr Stratmann.

Mr Stratmann released Mr Vasic on the condition the surety be posted, he abide by a strict curfew, report to his police station and not use drugs.

He is expected to reappear at court in November.
