Swift justice as accused jailed for three months

A HERNE Hill man was jailed for three months yesterday only 24 hours after a dramatic police raid on the share house where he lived.

The swift justice came after Geelong detectives swooped on a rental property on Douglass St about 6.15pm on Monday, arresting 34-year-old Trevor Robertson, and seizing drugs, weapons and cash.

Shocked neighbours said it was “scary” to have a raid “like something out of a TV show” happen on the usually quiet street.

The house at the centre of the drama is owned by former federal MP for Corio Gavan O’Connor.

While Mr O’Connor, 71, does not live there, his son, Adam O’Connor, was named in court yesterday as one of the occupants with Robertson.

Adam O’Connor was not connected in any way to his housemate’s offending.

A local who saw the “heavy duty” raid told the Geelong Advertiser he saw armed police storm into the house with sniffer dogs.

“My wife and I had never seen anything like it,” he said.

“There were forensic teams, sniffer dogs and it looked like they had called the SWAT in.”

Robertson appeared in custody at court yesterday where he was jailed for three months after pleading guilty to drugs and weapon offences stemming from the raid.

The Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard he had been living at the property.

Geelong CIU Senior Constable Jesse Timms said police were searching for firearms at the home, however none were found.

Instead, police discovered a butterfly knife and knuckle knife in Robertson’s bedside drawer, along with GHB and dozens of capsules and tablets, believed to be steroids.

He immediately lodged an appeal against his jail term but was refused bail.

He was remanded in custody until an appeal is heard in the County Court on a later date.

The man who saw Monday night’s raid said police had blocked off the street as they searched the property for hours.

“It was pretty scary,” he said. “I’m still blown away . . . it was like something out of a TV show.”

The Geelong Advertiser contacted Gavan O’Connor yesterday but he declined to comment.
