Thief had imitation gun

-

A 22-YEAR-OLD man who used an imitation gun to intimidate a security guard as he stole from Kmart in Belmont has been jailed for four months.

Dylan Malone, of no fixed address, brandished the imitation gun in front of a security guard about 11.45pm on June 10 as he left the store with stolen items worth $134.50 including a backpack.

The Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday that Malone sped from the scene in a stolen Nissan Navara and later ran a red light at the intersection of Moorabool St and Fyans St, South Geelong as he fled from police.

The court heard police found a long-arm rifle with a silencer attached, the goods stolen from Kmart, counterfeit money, 1.5g of ice and 16g of cannabis inside the car after it was dumped in Thomson.

Prosecutor Victoria McPhee told the court Malone ran from the scene after the car was dumped.

Malone’s lawyer told the court that “substance abuse and alcohol abuse (were) the catalysts for his offending”.

Malone was found guilty of possessing an imitation firearm, theft, car theft, assault on a woman known to him, failing to stop on police direction and weapon possession among other offences. He has already served 88 days in custody. JOHN Todd from Anakie Primary School must feel like Charlie from the Chocolate Factory.
