Selwood wants to play on

- JOSH BARNES

A COUPLE of sultanas as payment might be below the league minimum, but that is what Scott Selwood is willing to take to keep his career alive.

The 12-year AFL veteran has taken a considerate view to his future as he prepares to sit down with Geelong in coming days.

Speaking at Geelong’s Wacky Wednesday, the man affectionately known as Scooter said he would understand if he was told he wasn’t required in 2020.

“We’ve got to make a really smart decision with the club and make sure we get a list together going forward that can win us a premiership,” Selwood said.

“We need to be really strategic and if I’m part of it that would be great for me, and if I’m not then I will respect the decision and understand where the club is coming from.

“I’d play for two sultanas, to be honest with you. I love the challenge of footy, I love what it brings and the relationships it creates.”

Despite completing his first pre-season in his time with the Cats since joining at the start of 2016, Selwood only appeared in two matches this season. He averaged just over 20 disposals a game in 14 games at VFL level.

A best-and-fairest winner with West Coast in 2012, Selwood said the move east had been a success, even if his AFL career had come to a close.

He said it was possible he would explore other options to stay on the field.

“I haven’t gone down that path yet, I’ve enjoyed the Geelong footy club so much,” he said. “It’s given me so much confidence, I love the coach and coaching staff.

“I was down on confidence as a person and my body was quite sore at the time (of the move), it took me a fair while to get going again.

“I feel like my body is fit and healthy again for the first time in a long time.”

Selwood, 29, has played 169 AFL games, including 34 at Geelong.
