NEW-LOOK CORIO CLUB RIGHT ON TRACK

-

CORIO Little Athletics Club enters the new season with an ambitious goal of increasing its membership by 20 per cent.

The Corio club has been around for 53 years — in fact it was the seventh centre established in Victoria, which is why the number seven is incorporated into the club’s logo.

This year, Corio Little Athletics is hoping to attract some new faces.

Coupled with a new IAAF-standard track that will be used this summer for the first time, club officials are confident they will achieve their target.

The club hosted its comeand-try day last Friday at Goldsworthy Reserve, making use of the AFL Grand Final public holiday to entice new children to the sport.

“We are an inclusive centre and very family oriented,” Corio Little Athletics Centre president Simon Hill.

“As an athletics club, we offer a variety of activities for kids to try such as running, jumping and throwing.

“Our club offers both a summer and cross country (winter) season and provides social interaction for athletes with kids from outside their usual school groups.”

Hill said athletics was also a good way for footballers of all codes, basketballers and netballers to keep fit in their off-season.

“Athletics is a good summer activity for keeping fitness levels for winter sport,” Hill said.

“Apart from the opportunities for the talented and more ambitious athletes to compete at regional and state level events, we also offer the chance to older athletes to learn skills if officiating at events.”

The Corio Little Athletics Centre was founded in 1966 by Trevor Billingham, the founder of the Little Athletics movement.

It was twice voted the top centre in Victoria and is gunning for a third title.
