FALCONS STAR HEEDS CALL OF CAREER

- JOSH BARNES

A CAREER off the field has influenced rising star Lucy McEvoy’s decision to not nominate Geelong ahead of the AFLW draft.

McEvoy has captained the Geelong Falcons for three seasons and won AllAustralian selection three times, including as skipper this season.

Expected to be a top selection at the draft on October 22, McEvoy chose to nominate Victoria metro as her preferred destination, meaning she will likely be drafted to a Melbourne club and not Geelong.

Western Bulldogs, Carlton and St Kilda hold the first three Melbourne-based selections in the draft.

A Wallington product via St Mary’s, McEvoy told SEN 1116 her desire to become a paramedic was behind the decision.

“It was a bit more based around my schooling and studies, I want to to go Victoria University hopefully and do paramedicine and do something in that area,” she said.

“The decision took me quite a while and I spoke to plenty of people and took on board what they had to say.”

McEvoy’s coach with the Falcons, Jason Armistead, said she was an enticing prospect. The 18-year-old was named in the back pocket, at full forward and in the midfield in each of her three consecutive All-Australian selections.

“She’s going to be a once in a generation player, she’s a great leader and been our captain for three years and she can play every spot on the ground,” Armistead said.

“I would see her as being an onballer and inside midfielder sort of type.

“She played centre halfback for us, is a great mark and a really nice kick and decision maker. She’s been amazing with us, she’s got an awesome attitude.”

Fellow Falcons Luka Lesosky-Hay and Paige Sheppard are with McEvoy at the AFLW draft combine until tomorrow, while potential Geelong father-daughter selection Millie Brown — the daughter of former Geelong player Paul — is also an attendee.
