Friendly way breaks the ice

- MEAGAN ROOTH

G’DAY Mate is more than a friendly greeting for some residents suffering social isolation as a result of mental health issues.

The familiar phrase is also the name of an important program bringing men together in Geelong.

Encompass Community Services established the G’Day Mate project in July to encourage community engagement in short group activities, such as film screenings, games of pool and fishing excursions.

Janelle Davey, the organisation’s recreation and travel manager, says finding meaningful connections with others was fundamental for mental health and wellbeing.

“We know first-hand about enduring personal challenges and tackling adverse situations with mental health, so we’re here to provide a simple solution with no pressure or expectations from those who want to participate,” Janelle says.

There are many success stories from G’Day Mate.

Program coach Matt Burns has watched a participant evolve from avoiding social interactions to now enthusiastically attending weekly activities — even going as far as planning outfits days in advance.

“I love seeing first-hand participants working towards achieving their goals,” Janelle says.

Encompass also hosts longer trips away for women and men with disabilities as part of the travel and recreation department.

For the participants, there are opportunities to build social confidence, form friendships and improve life skills. It can also provide a break for families and carers.

Janelle recalls one group member who has flourished.

“She wants to do all the recreation and travel activities now,” she says.

“Her family has noticed how much happier she is.

“She made friends, improved her communications and expresses herself better.”

Janelle approaches the program with an empathetic nature, having experienced her own challenges. She encourages others to acknowledge their feelings and seek help if needed.

Even nourishing the body with the right foods can be a positive starting point, she says.

“Be kind to yourself,” she says. “Just put one foot in front of the other.

“Remember you are not alone and we’re all fighting our personal demons.” To take part or volunteer in the G’Day Mate program, call 5222 3377 or email mate@encompass-cs.org.au For more information, visit encompass-cs.org.au
