Eagle Jones flies back to nest after sacking

- JOSH BARNES GFL

THE tantalising prospect of playing in a premiership has enticed Jordan Jones to return to Newtown & Chilwell.

The midfielder has signed with the Eagles after he was sacked from his role as Ocean Grove coach midway through this year.

Jones was aligned to Newtown while he was on Williamstown’s VFL list in 2018 and played six games.

He said he had been keeping an eye on the Eagles and was impressed by their effort in making a semi-final this year.

The former West Perth and Peel Thunder player said a long relationship with coach Damien McMahon gave him no hesitation in returning to Elderslie Reserve.

“They had a pretty successful season, although it finished up a little bit early come finals,” he said.

“When I played there two years ago they won six or seven games in a row in the back half of the season and they’re more than capable now, they’re only going to get better.

“I like to say I’m a pretty loyal person and I’ve known (McMahon) for a while, he actually coached against me in Perth. I’m really looking forward to joining the group and pushing for a premiership.”

A modified program will see Jones working away from the main group at the start of preseason after serious knee surgery in May.

He said he had started running and would work with the Newtown support staff to rebuild his fitness before he expects to stake a claim to start in the midfield come Round 1.

“I’m certainly unfit but I’ve been doing this for long enough anyway, at the moment I’m just trying to build on the base fitness,” he said.

“We’ll structure up a plan, I’ve done it in previous seasons where I go away and work by myself, I’m not too concerned about that.”
