BURNING AMBITION FOR DRAGONS

- JOSH BARNES

A NEW female program will help the Dragons find their wings.

Bell Park has launched its first senior women’s football side as part of an ambitious female program, with hopes to field four sides in 2020 from under-12s up to a senior side.

Former Torquay assistant coach Lisa Robinson will spearhead the program as coach and she said she was looking forward to building the program from the ground up.

“It’s an opportunity to develop a strong junior program and take on board the senior team as well,” Robinson said.

“We’re planning to get a solid coaching environment and get a really good team of coaches around us. What we want to do is develop pathways for juniors.”

The female teams will wear a slightly altered version of the traditional Bell Park jumper, with purple numbers and trim.

The colour combination of green, white and purple originates from the Women’s Social and Political Union, which fought for the vote for women in the UK in the early 20th century.

Robinson, who has coached female basketball, netball and cricket, said the club hoped to build as part of a long-term plan.

“We want to be well respected as a women’s football program and build a solid foundation,” she said.

“I’m really big on supporting women in sport, I’m a strong believer in equality.”

The club will hold an information night tomorrow at 6pm at the Bell Park clubrooms.
