Slow start for Bareena
BAREENA suffered its second narrow loss in as many weeks when it was upset by City of Geelong by two shots on Saturday.
While Bareena secured six points for its three rink wins, the result was not what the Badgers would have had in mind playing at home.
Bareena skip Brannon Shelton said a poor start was to blame for what turned out to be a disappointing result.
“We just had a pretty slow start, which was a bit surprising playing at home, and a bit disappointing,” Shelton said.
“The last 10 ends we came home pretty strong but couldn’t quite get over the line.
“We were just one rink down on the day, and unfortunately a couple of us couldn’t cover that rink.”
Bareena now plays Lara, which fell to Queenscliff at the weekend, and Shelton said while it was not desperation stakes just yet, the Badgers needed a win this week to avoid chasing their tail for the rest of the season.
“The last two seasons we have had a knack of winning the close games and obviously the first two this year haven’t gone our way,” he said.
“That is the way it goes sometimes, you can’t win all the close ones, but we definitely have to win next week or else we are going to be chasing our tails for the rest of the season.
“Picking up 10 points in the first two games isn’t too bad because one week gets us back in the mix, whereas if you aren’t scoring any points it really hurts, so the fact we scored six isn’t too bad if we win next week and hopefully we can turn our form around.” Lara pushed Queenscliff the full distance at home but the visitors still grabbed 16 points to add to their opening clean sweep.
In other results, Eastern Park star Nathan Bush returned from playing in the Australian Champion of Champions playoffs to lead the Parkers to a solid 24-shot win over Highton. Drysdale defeated Ocean Grove (2) by 36 shots to walk away with 17 points, while Ocean Grove (1) travelled to Torquay and claimed all 18 points with a 48-shot victory.
