Lucy’s dusky treasure

- FRESHWATER ANDREW ASKS:

week, Rod saw a number of respectable pinkies taken from here, along with a seven-gilled shark that would have been around 10kg.

John Clements of the Lake Purrumbete Holiday Park reports that Winchelsea redfin guru George Gillies was on the job last week, taking fish to 960 grams on Berkley Pumpkinseed, split-tail minnows.

Chinook salmon have also been on offer, said John, and among those to catch them was Paul O’Connor, a visitor from Benalla, who picked up several to 1.8kg on a Tassie Devil.

Geoff, on a recent visit to Queensland I ran into a friend of yours who described shark fishing with you from the Point Lonsdale pier. Can you give me any advice on what is required for this exercise? I am also a keen kayak fisherman. Can you give me any locations where I might try my luck for snapper from the kayak in Geelong, but not too far offshore?

Andrew, if you are going to fish for sharks from the Point Lonsdale Pier it would be a good idea to mark your line at 50 metres to ensure you don’t put it out any further or you could be booked for supposedly fishing in a marine park, as stupid as that sounds.

Provided the wind is from the westerly quarter, you may use balloons on a tether to your trace to send out your bait — preferably a small tuna or bonito — provided that attachment remains intact, because if the balloons are released — again, as stupid as it sounds — you may be booked for littering, as I have been, regardless that there are major events where many balloons are released.

In regard to snapper fishing from a kayak, there’s a good hunting ground for respectable pinkies — and the occasional bigger fish — between the Geelong Yacht Club and Eastern Beach, currently a favourite haunt for soft-plastics aficionados.
