Bowling run rolls Heads

- BPCA A1 JOSH CONWAY

ANGLESEA has sent an ominous message, dismantling a fearsome Barwon Heads batting line-up for just 79 as the Roos romped to victory.

Anglesea had no trouble hauling in the modest total on Saturday, losing just three wickets, after their bowlers shared the load led by Ky Eskrigge (4-28 off eight overs) and Jacob Nolan (3-13 off 8).

“It was a bit of a surprise, to be honest, to roll through them like that,” Anglesea captain Ned Cooper said.

“They’re a good side and I’m sure it won’t happen again next time we play them.”

Winning the toss and batting first, Barwon Heads would have had dreams of a dashing start, but Lewy Hyland (1) was dismissed cheaply and the Seagulls could never fully recover, despite some fight from Sam Schaller (28) and Kane Atkins (23 not out).

Dale Kerr (1-16) and Dylan Taylor (1-13) were economical and also among the wickets as Heads were skittled in the 35th over. “We go pretty deep with our bowling,” Cooper said.

“We had a guy who didn’t bowl last week (Eskrigge) stand up and take 4-for, so it’s a good spread of wicket takers.

“I can throw the ball to anyone and know they’ll be able to get the job done.”

Cooper himself then anchored the straightforward chase, finishing unbeaten on 46 as Anglesea claimed their third straight victory with the loss of just three wickets.

Despite an unbeaten start to the season, Cooper still wants more out of his batting line-up with the bowlers holding up their end of the bargain.

“We’re bowling probably as well as we can, but we’re a long way off with the bat still,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do in the facet of the game. If we can get that in order, we should be playing some really good cricket.”
