Lynch’s hostile bowling

- WES CUSWORTH

SOUTH Barwon looks set to break through for its first win of the season after paceman Nick Lynch tore through St Joseph’s at Russell Zampatti Oval.

The Joeys had few answers for the pace and movement of Lynch, as the Swans’ firebrand claimed 7-30 from 14 hostile overs.

“‘Chicken’ (Lynch) was the absolute standout, bowling line and length all day, setting the tone for the entire bowling performance by our team,” South Barwon captain Terry Hill said.

“There was a real sense that we were up and about with our fielding and our bowling lines today, which creates a really great environment for us.”

Lynch found capable allies in seamers Ryan Gibson (2-36) and Kyle Bienefelt (1-24), as opener Luke Ibbs was once again left to play a gritty, lone hand for St Joseph’s.

The Joeys’ skipper occupied the crease for 198 minutes as he constructed a seven-boundary 66 before becoming the 10th wicket to fall.

Teenager Jack Mullen (13) courageously attempted to counter the Swans’ pace attack and partnered Ibbs in the most productive stand of the innings (37) for the fifth wicket.

“It was a pretty tough day for the batters, but to Luke’s credit he really applied himself and committed to not getting out,” Hill said.

In response, the Swans started in disastrous fashion as they slumped to 3-6 at the hands of paceman Matt Tarbett (2-24).

However, a steadying, unbeaten 60-ball hand from Joel Davies (28 not out) set the visitors back on track, now needing just 64 runs for their maiden win of the summer.

“I think you have to be breaking even at Christmas as a minimum,” Hill said. “Our effort today showed that we really want it and we will strive to achieve what we can.”
