Dynamic duo well clear on young rich list

-

ATLASSIAN co- founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar have topped the list of Australia’s richest under-40s for an eighth consecutive year.

AFR Magazine’s Young Rich List shows the 39-yearold project management software duo streets ahead of their nearest rivals with combined wealth of $26.71 billion, or more than $13 billion each.

Next on the list released yesterday were Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obreacht, founders of graphic design software company Canva, with a combined worth of $1.35 billion.

Collis and Cyan Ta’eed, cofounders of digital asset marketplace Envato, took fourth place after their combined wealth nearly doubled in a year to $799 million.

Real estate software firm Compass co-founder Ori Allon’s wealth jumped from $539 million to $747 million, securing fifth place on the list.

The 100 wealthiest young self-made Australians had a collective worth of $41.2 billion in 2019, nearly double the $23.5 billion of a year earlier.

“The wealthiest self-made young Australians are growing their businesses at a rate that is challenging legacy ASX companies,” Rich List editor Michael Bailey said.

Tech entrepreneurs dominated the list with 36 of 100 placings, followed by 20 for athletes and entertainers, and 16 for fintech and financial services.

“While technology is still the best way to get on to the Young Rich List, this year’s list is notable for the number of sportspeople, especially basketballers,” AFR Magazine editor Matthew Drummond said.

Golfer Adam Scott was No.20 on the list, but NBA stars Andrew Bogut, Joe Ingles, Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova, Ben Simmons and Dante Exum make basketball the most represented sport.
