HOMICIDE POLICE CALLED IN AFTER BRUTAL CARPARK ASSAULT

THE homicide squad is hunting for answers after a savage Eastern Beach assault left a 41-year-old Colac man clinging to life in hospital last night.

The victim was rushed to Geelong hospital after being found on Ritchie Blvd just before midnight on Monday.

The man was transferre­d to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition about 3am yesterday, a Geelong hospital spokesman said.

Police are calling for witnesses to come forward.

Two forensic officers combed a section of the Ritchie Blvd carpark for hours yesterday afternoon, focusing their attention on what appeared to be the site of the assault.

A black T-shirt found in a beachside bin was taken away as evidence as the crew, wearing face masks, photograph­ed the scene.

Detectives also spent about half an hour at the scene with a man and woman, who appeared to be giving statements.

Victoria Police spokeswoma­n Natalie Dean said police were appealing for witnesses.

“The 41-year-old Colac man was last seen leaving a property on Swanston St about 6.15pm (Monday) dressed in a red and black check longsleeve­d shirt and pants,” Leading Senior Constable Dean said.

“Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have seen the man or who has informatio­n in relation to the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.”

The injured man was rushed to Geelong hospital after being found on Ritchie Blvd just before midnight on Monday.

He was transferre­d to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition about 3am yesterday, a Geelong hospital spokesman said.

At 7.30 last night, about 20 hours after the incident, the man was reported to be still in a critical condition.

At Eastern Beach yesterday detectives had establishe­d a crime scene, with a large section of the carpark cordoned off. Uniformed police guarded the scene.

The forensic team focused its effort on a green rubbish bin as well as a disabled carparking space where markers were put down and photos were taken.
