WEYMYSS CAMEO EASES PRESSURE
A BLISTERING cameo from Brendan Wemyss helped Modewarre claim another big scalp in the T20 Cup last night.
Wemyss smashed 31 from 15 balls at No. 6 as the Warriors chased down Marshall’s total of 145 with an over to spare.
He crunched two sixes to mid-wicket at Marshall, relieving the pressure on Modewarre, who felt the pinch late as James Menzies (4-36) threatened to swing the match back in the Bears’ favour.
Steven King spearheaded the run chase for the Warriors with 40, while captain Jake Hooson made a patient 24.
Earlier in the evening, Marshall’s middle-order batsmen Jack Burns and Raviteja Allada formed the backbone of the innings. No. 6 Burns paced his innings to the death, making 43 from 42 balls, while Allada crunched a crucial 29 from 27 deliveries.
Allada’s knock included three sixes that carried the Bears’ total to a competitive 145.
Glen Alexander and Stan Grazotis had earlier set the tone with a 43-run partnership at the top.
Alexander struck 29 from 20, including two sixes and two fours, and Grazotis hit 18 from 17 deliveries.
But that’s when the wheels fell off for Marshall, with Grazotis, No. 3 Nathan Frye (golden duck), Jake Hilton (two) run out as the home side slumped from 0-42 to 5-67.
The Warriors were slick in the field, producing four run outs for the innings, with Nat Matthews (1-26) and Simon Patterson (1-29) the only wicket takers.
In other GCA2 games, Bell Park (2-108) defeated Geelong City (5-106) and Highton (1-89) overcame Manifold Heights (9-87).
Scores between St Peter’s and Torquay were unavailable.
In GCA1, Rob Sodomaco smashed 81 from 43 as Lara 5-198 defeated Grovedale 141 at Burdoo Reserve, while East Belmont (6-189) thrashed Bell Post Hill (9-69).
In Pool B, North Geelong (5-157) defeated South Barwon (93), while Newtown & Chilwell (4-121) hauled in Murgheboluc’s total of 6-120 with three balls to spare and six wickets in hand.
