Miers off to flyer

NEW SIGNINGS PUT IN FIRST APPEARANCE

- JOSH BARNES

AN arduous shuttle run kicked off pre-season for most of Geelong’s younger group at Deakin University yesterday.

Senior players were not required, with second-tofourth-year players attending as Gryan Miers and soon-tobe rookied Oscar Brownless led the way early.

There were a couple of notable faces to kick things off as the road to 2020 started.

Patrick Dangerfield was a surprise attendee, but has been a regular at the club throughout the off-season and looked keen to get going.

As expected, Mitch Duncan was with the group, alongside fifth-year player Nakia Cockatoo.

Prize recruits Josh Jenkins and Jack Steven were in attendance as well, in their first session with Geelong.

That group of players watched on during the shuttle run, with Cockatoo running his own sprints alongside the group, showing off his trademark explosive power.

Having battled through injuries since being drafted at the end of 2014, Cockatoo was upbeat and vocal during the session.

Irishman Stefan Okunbor started his second pre-season away from the main group, doing his own running under the watchful eye of support staff.

While he is a fourth year player, Tom Stewart was absent from the session, as he continues his overseas travel after getting married last month.

Similar to Brownless, delisted ruckman Ryan Abbott was with the group as he also is expected to be rookied by the Cats.

Plenty of encouragement was hurled at third-year midfielder Charlie Constable during the shuttle run as he continued to work on his endurance and try to earn a regular spot in the midfield in 2020.

Big man Esava Ratugolea looked in good shape as he kept pace with the smaller players during the running.
