Green in for Open

- LACHIE YOUNG

AUSTRALIA’S most recent major champion will arrive in Geelong next year for the 2020 ISPS Handa Vic Open.

Hannah Green made history in June when she claimed the Women’s PGA Championship, becoming only the third Australian female golfer to take out a major tournament.

The West Australian sensation has catapulted to No.23 on the Rolex world rankings after a breakout year that saw her career earnings crash through the $1 million mark.

She will be one of the most highly followed players at Thirteenth Beach in February.

Green will join another major winner, 2006 US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, who is in the midst of preparing for the upcoming Presidents Cup as assistant to captain Ernie Els.

Tickets for the Vic Open go on sale today, and Golf Australia operations boss Simon Brookhouse said golf fans would be thrilled to have the chance to see Green and Ogilvy up close.

“To see Hannah and Geoff show their support is a great sign for a tournament that continues to amaze the golfing world,” Brookhouse said.

“They are both very popular players and always attract great interest, so I’m sure that will continue when we get down to Barwon Heads in February.”

The Vic Open will again be co-sanctioned by the LPGA and ALPG tours on the women’s side, while the European Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia will jointly sanction the men’s tournament.

The tournament features equal prizemoney for men and women and is free to attend for all Victorian golf club members, but other tickets are on sale through O-tix and remain some of the best value in elite sport at only $10 a day or $30 for a season pass.

Those with a Seniors Card can enter free of charge, as can children aged less than 17.

The Vic Open will be held in Barwon Heads at Thirteenth Beach Golf Club from February 6 to 9.
