Call for hit-run witnesses

- TAMARA McDONALD

POLICE are calling for witnesses of a hit-run collision in Geelong’s northern suburbs on Christmas Day.

The incident occurred about 4.30pm at the APCO service station on Thompson Rd in North Geelong.

A black Mazda CX5 left the petrol bowser and collided with a stationary vehicle parked next to the store, Geelong Highway Patrol sergeant Brian McKiterick said.

The crash severely damaged the rear of the parked vehicle, Sgt McKiterick said, and the driver fled the scene.

He urged any witnesses to contact Geelong Highway Patrol.

Thompson Rd has a shocking crash history, with 71 crashes over the past five years and six lives lost on the strip this year alone.

No one was caught drinkdriving on Christmas Day, despite police setting up several breath-testing sites, Sgt

McKiterick said. He said police were impressed with driver behaviour, with people clearly thinking ahead regarding their transport.

One driver was nabbed over the prescribed blood alcohol limit in Geelong yesterday morning, he said.

Police are conducting Operation Roadwise across the state until January 6, aiming to keep the community safe on the roads over the festive period.

On Monday, a hoon was caught driving more than 60km/h over the speed limit on the Princes Highway and his Mazda 323 was impounded.

The 26-year-old driver, a holder of an international licence, was clocked by police in Winchelsea at 161km/h in a 100km/h zone about 7pm.

The man will be charged on summons.

Patrol’s Sergeant Darren Murphy said the high speed was “ridiculous”.

“As much as we may think the road is safe and he’s capable, he’s not experienced anywhere near enough to do those sort of speeds,” he said.

Last Friday, a P-plater also had his car impounded after he was caught speeding near Lara.

Highway Patrol officers nabbed the driver at 153km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Princes Freeway.
