Blue edged out of back-to-back bid

VICTORIA Blue’s under-18s will battle South Australia for bronze at the 2020 Australian Youth Championsh­ip in Geelong today.

Blue wrapped up the opening round with a 12-9 win over Country New South Wales yesterday to finish with a 5-2 record but it was not enough to keep alive its hopes of going back-to-back.

Queensland and Western Australia instead will battle for gold from 4.30pm on diamond one after edging Vic Blue in a three-way tie.

Adam Harris played a key role in yesterday’s win over Country NSW. He drove in four runs on two hits.

Vic Blue trailed 9-3 early before pulling away with a sixrun fourth.

Harris singled to drive in two runs in the third.

He drove in another run in the fourth after Country New South Wales pulled away by six runs.

Harris added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, providing an insurance run.

Geelong’s Jarryd Wood and Mcleod Sell had two RBIs.

Victoria White’s under-18s will play Country New South Wales for seventh after finishing the opening round last.

They were unable to do Blue a favour against WA, falling 10-6.

Rhys Fairweathe­r drove in two runs for Vic White.

In the under-16s, Victoria Blue will take on Country New

South Wales in the fifth-place playoff.

Blue took down Victoria White 6-3 yesterday.

Vic White will take on the Australian Capital Territory in the seventh-place playoff.

New South Wales takes on

Queensland in the under-16 gold medal game from 1pm.

Play starts at 9am at Geelong Baseball Centre.
