Mokbel Jr off to jail

- HARRISON TIPPET

DRUG kingpin Tony Mokbel’s nephew was jailed for contempt of court yesterday after refusing to answer questions about a fatal Melbourne shooting.

Anthony Mokbel, 24, pleaded guilty after refusing to give evidence about the attack outside a Kensington boxing match last March.

Magistrate Kieran Gillian said it was a “serious example of a serious charge” and jailed the son of Tony Mokbel’s brother Horty for 14 days.

The young Mokbel has previous convictions for gun and traffic crimes and is appealing the latest sentence.

He had been ordered to give evidence about the shooting death of Ben Togiai, 30, outside Kensington’s Melbourne Pavilion on March 1, 2019.

Mokbel is not a suspect in the crime, but refused to answer questions after being ordered to attend a compulsory examination on February 5 and was charged with contempt.

THE judge’s announcement was music to Aleesha Viola’s ears yesterday as she claimed the title of Geelong’s Best Busker on behalf of her band The Violas.

Aleesha (above), her sister Jess and bandmates Fergus and Darcy were announced the winners of the annual competition in the Little Malop St mall, winning citywide bragging rights.

The group had performed a five-song, 20-minute set to be named the best of the six acts taking part.

Aleesha said the competition was incredibly strong.

“We were definitely surprised,” she said.

“It’s very exciting.”

Aleesha and Jess have played together for four years, before inviting their new bandmates to join the group more recently.
