Addict accused of stealing from ex-partner seeks drug rehab

- GREG DUNDAS

A MOOLAP man is accused of breaking into his ex-partner’s home to steal three motorbikes and her computer.

It’s further alleged he used her Apple MacBook to raid her bank accounts and lure her male friends into a trap.

Daniel Cox, 22, has been in jail since being accused of the crimes four months ago, but might get bail this week if he can get on to a drug rehab program.

The ice addict and former concreter fronted Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday, where it was alleged he burgled his former partner’s East Geelong home twice in October last year.

The laptop, computer storage devices, two motorbikes worth $20,000 each, another worth $5000 and a trailer were among items he allegedly took.

Police also claim he siphoned almost $5000 from the woman’s bank account into his own, and used her computer to access her social media accounts so he could send messages to a male friend of hers.

“He was pretending to be the victim (the woman) and asking him (the male friend) to come over,” Senior Constable

Matt Baden said.

He said the man previously used the woman’s phone to “lure” a different man into a similar trap, assaulting him at the property.

“I believe that was his intention again this time, but he didn’t have the opportunity to do so because they were wise to his tricks,” Sen-Constable Baden said.

The court heard a number of the items taken from the woman’s home were found by police at Mr Cox’s parents’ house within days of going missing.

The stolen motorbikes were recovered by police in Mount Gambier and Ararat, but a red Ducati was still missing, the court heard.

Mr Cox’s lawyer argued the man should be released to live with his parents because the case against him was not strong.

It was also argued the length of time he’d served in custody was approaching the sentence he might get if found guilty on his charges. Those charges include multiple counts of burglary and theft.

Mr Cox will be assessed for a court-ordered support program before his application for bail is decided this week.
