NEW HOME FOR NEWLYWEDS

- REBECCA THOMPSON

BELMONT continues to be a first-home buyer favourite, with a young Geelong couple winning the keys to 23 Bailey St at auction on Saturday.

Newlyweds Emily and Jakob McCorkell were able to fend off one other bidder to secure the three-bedroom, onebathroom renovated house, set on a 558sq m block, for $561,000.

Ms McCorkell’s dad, Wayne Dowd, was on hand to do their bidding.

Mr Dowd was determined from the outset, firing off a strong opening bid of $470,000 after Barry Plant Highton auctioneer Matthew Constantine officially opened auction proceedings.

The McCorkells, who were married in December last year, had only been property hunting for three weeks.

They plan to move in and enjoy all of the home’s renovated delights, as well as the location close to Belmont’s best.

Mrs McCorkell said the pair was drawn to the “move-in ready” factor.

Mr Constantine said the property had attracted plenty of interest from first-home buyers, and that it had been renovated to perfection.

Inside, the floorplan offers a light-filled lounge, stylish kitchen and meals area and monochrome bathroom, along with a covered entertainment area.

The location is close to schools, High St shops, the Torquay Rd commercial hub and the Barwon River, and offers easy access to the Surf Coast and Geelong Ring Road.

The property was listed with a quoted price range of $480,000 to $520,000, and last traded in June 2006 when it sold for $252,000.
