DAVE’S LEGEND STATUS WRIT LARGE

- NATALEE KERR

WITH not a single patrol missed after 54 years of dedicated service, an Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club stalwart has now received a “special” honour.

Club legend Dave Renton got the surprise of his life last Sunday when he discovered the club’s new lifesaving watchtower was named after him.

“I was invited to cut the ribbon for its opening ceremony, so I thought I was just there for that,” Mr Renton said.

“To my surprise, when I was handed the scissors, one of the guys from the club said ‘Have a look behind you’.”

The veteran member turned around to see a plaque on the wall with his name on it.

“It was one of the most exciting moments in my life, I never in my wildest dreams thought this would happen,” Mr Renton said.

“I’ve actually worked out of the facility as well, so to have it named after me was really special.”

The 70-year-old joined the club when he was 15. Mr Renton said he has rescued a “fair few” people during 54 years in patrol, including 13 in one day.

“I remember I was scared to go home in case someone else got swept out to sea,” he said.

“I enjoy saving people’s lives — to be able to perform a rescue and have someone survive and be happy is my favourite thing about the job.

“No matter the aches in my hands, legs and feet — it was my commitment.”

Having now stepped away from patrols due to health problems, Mr Renton continues to mentor young surf lifesavers and help the club that is “so close” to his heart.
