World-class cancer help

- EMILIO LANERA

THE opening of a world-class cancer centre at Epworth Geelong has been predicted to help reduce wait times and provide necessary treatment for patients in Geelong and across the western region.

The Icon Group centre, which was opened yesterday, has the capacity to treat more than 600 people each year and features the latest in radiation oncology technology.

Federal Regional Health Minister Mark Coulton said the new centre would be welcome news to patients in Geelong and the surrounding region who required radiation oncology as part of their cancer treatment.

“By having access to this new life saving equipment, fewer patients from western Victoria will have to travel to Melbourne for treatment,” he said.

”They will be able to recover closer to their friends and family, which is so important.”

In Geelong for the opening, Mr Coulton said the new centre featured $3.9 million worth of radiotherapy equipment funded by the Federal Government.

“As Minister for Regional Health, I know how important it is for Australians living and working in regional areas to be able to access these vital services,” he said.

“The Government will also pay Medicare benefits for cancer treatment at the centre, including radiotherapy services, meaning patients will be able to access this life-saving equipment and expertise through Medicare.”

Former Hawthorn captain and Brisbane Lions star, Luke

Hodge, also attended the opening of the new cancer centre.

“I grew up in Colac which is only about 40 minutes from Geelong. My family have always been part of this community.” Hodge said. “I’ve known people who have had to travel into Melbourne for treatment, so having even more cancer services available to the community is a good thing.”

Cancer incidences are projected to increase in Victoria over the next 10 years, with more than 79,000 men and more than 68,000 women estimated to be diagnosed with cancer this year.
