LION-HEARTED CLUB TO HELP THOSE IN NEED

- JOSH BARNES

HAVING been on the receiving end of support from the community for years, the Leopold playing group has decided to give back.

The leadership group of the GFL club had discussions following the shutdown of normal training and games because of coronavirus on how they could still keep a team attitude and serve those in need.

A paramedic by day, David Morris suggested the players put their hands up to collect groceries, medicine or other supplies li f for th those who h f feel l uncomfortable leaving the house or are self-isolating.

When presented to the whole playing group, there was no hesitation from the Lions.

“We were trying to work out as a playing group, how do we keep the group together? Who knows how many months we will have limited contact,” Morris said.

“We put the post up on Saturday night in our own private Facebook group and every single member of the playing group has responded that they are available.

“I “It j just shows the character of our group, that it’s not individually-minded at all, and they have the chance to give back for everyone who has given to us as a footy club, whether it’s members or sponsors or supporters.

“It was something that may work or may not, but at the moment with the legs it’s getting I think it will work.”

The team will take care of the drop offs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as weekends, times they would normally have been training at Memorial Park.

All local football has been called off until at least May 31 because of the virus.

Morris said the idea presented a chance to bring a bit of calm into the world of those trapped inside their homes.

“It’s all about helping at the moment because there is so much unknown out there,” he said. “A lot of people are unsure what they can and can’t do at the moment so we are just trying to remove a bit of uncertainty or frustration and bring a bit of calm to the scariness at the moment.”

Those wanting to be part of the program should get in touch with the club on its Facebook page or contact Morris on 0417 683 530.

IT JUST SHOWS THE CHARACTER OF OUR GROUP, THAT IT’S NOT INDIVIDUALLY-MINDED AT ALL, AND THEY HAVE THE CHANCE TO GIVE BACK FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS GIVEN TO US AS A FOOTY CLUB.” DAVID MORRIS
