City’s new way for jabs

- TAMARA McDONALD

IMMUNISATION sessions in the City of Greater Geelong have moved to a new model in line with social distancing advice.

Open immunisation sessions have been replaced with individual appointments.

And from Wednesday, appointments will take place at three venues only during dedicated times.

Barwon Aquatic and Sports Centre in Ocean Grove, Leisuretime Sports Precinct in Norlane and Barwon Valley Activitiy Centre in Belmont have been chosen to allow adequate spacing for people waiting for appointments.

Barwon Health Immunisation Service clinical co-ordinator Caroline Poynder said during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was important to keep routine vaccinations upto-date for children.

“Barwon Health has temporarily changed venues to help ensure our clients are kept safe,” she said.

“We are using larger venues and all sessions will be by appointment only. This will help us protect the community by ensuring social distancing is maintained, and these measures will be even more important after the arrival of this year’s flu vaccine in mid-April.

“Since a COVID-19 vaccine is not yet available, it is essential that people protect themselves from the unknown complication of a possible dual infection.”

Cr Pat Murnane, chair of Geelong council’s community health, wellbeing and safety portfolio said the immunisation service provided by Barwon Health was a vital program protecting the health and safety of some of our youngest and most vulnerable community members.

Safety requirements are in place for everyone attending an appointment. Text messages have been sent to all families registered for the service.
