SHOPS PRESS SNOOZE

- NATALEE KERR

BEDDING retailer Snooze has closed its doors in Geelong and Waurn Ponds due to the “challenging” coronavirus outbreak.

A post on the retailer’s Facebook page yesterday said the Australian-owned company had been hurting following government restrictions put in place to try to stop the spread of coronavirus.

“We have decided to allow each of our franchise owners to decide whether they wish to remain open,” the post read.

“However, a few of our stores will close temporarily as of today, April 2, 2020.

“Snooze is committed to working with government and team members to minimise the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on our employees, customers and communities.”

The Waurn Ponds and Geelong West stores are no longer listed on the company’s website.

The closure was particularly disappointing for Geelong’s Mackenzie Broughton who was excited to surprise her boyfriend with a new bed for his birthday last weekend.

The 22-year-old bought the mattress and base from the Waurn Ponds store in January for $1800, with its arrival expected last Saturday.

Mother Michelle Barton said her daughter was left “completely devastated” when the bed never showed up.

“We were absolutely gobsmacked,” she said. “It was such a big purchase for her to make.”

Ms Barton said she rang the store on Friday to confirm the time of the delivery, which she was told was 12pm.

“12pm came and we were still waiting for the delivery to 5pm Saturday afternoon,” she said.

“We both tried ringing the store but no one answered.”

Snooze did not return the Geelong Advertiser’s calls yesterday.

The retailer has more than 80 stores across Australia.
