Teen Cat’s dominance recognised

- TOBY PRIME

RISING Geelong star Olivia Purcell has received the first of what will surely be many selections in the All-Australian squad.

The talented teenager was the only Cat representative when the 40-player group was released yesterday.

Purcell, 19, was one of the AFLW’s most improved players in 2020.

She was one of five players to play every game and led Geelong in disposals, metres gained, contested possessions, clearances, kicks and score involvements.

It’s why the Geelong Falcons premiership player is among the favourites for the club’s best-and-fairest.

Purcell said she was honoured to receive selection in the squad.

“It was really nice to get that recognition from the external panel,” Purcell said.

“I knew I’d put in the hard work and tried to do the best that I can, so it was nice to get that reward and be up there with some of the best players that I’ve idolised over the last couple of years.”

Purcell sustained a shoulder injury during last year’s VFLW season, which placed her AFLW campaign in doubt.

But she excelled in her recovery to establish herself as one of Geelong’s most important players.

Purcell said she was grateful coach Paul Hood and assistant Nat Wood gave her midfield minutes.

“I’m really happy with my progress and there are still things from this year just gone that I can’t wait to improve on,” she said.

The final team of 21 will be announced at the W Awards, which will be held at a date to be confirmed.
