Geelong’s getting back to business

- TAMARA McDONALD

THE Geelong Chamber of Commerce has applauded the State Government’s plan that will see small businesses ramp up in coming weeks as coronavirus restrictions are eased.

Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday revealed a raft of changes which will see traders, including beauty salons, gyms, cinemas and cafes, open or operate at increased capacity.

But he flagged coronavirus risk associated with offices, and those Geelong workers who can must continue to work from home until at least the end of June.

From June 1 beauty and personal care services like nail salons, spas and tattoo parlours will be able to open with up to 20 customers per space, but businesses must keep a record of customers’ contact details.

Property auctions and inspections, which have been limited to 10 people, will have a new 20-person limit, plus those required to conduct the activity, with agents also required to keep the contact details of all attendees.

Non-food and drink market stalls will also be able to open.

“If community transmission rates continue to remain low and testing rates continue to remain high, we will look to further relax restrictions from June 22,” Mr Andrews said.

“From that date, indoor fitness and recreation facilities will open, with up to 20 people per space and up to 10 people per group or activity at any one time.

“Up to 50 people will be permitted in restaurants, cafes, galleries, museums and for the first time, cinemas and theatres.”

The State Government had previously announced that from June 1 cafes and restaurants could serve meals to up to 20 customers at a time per enclosed space.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ben Flynn said he was supportive of the approach.

“I like the fact they’ve put small businesses first whilst maintaining a really safe approach for office workers,” Mr Flynn said.
