TIP OF THE WEEK

- LEAP FROG with Curlewis pro Steve Brodie

Now we are back playing competition golf, one of the things I have noticed is that the scoring is not as good as it was before isolation.

The feedback I am getting from my students and the Curlewis members is they are really struggling on the greens, particularly with how hard to hit their putts.

One of the best drills for speed control is called Leap Frog. I know for a fact many of the best players in the world still use this drill to maintain their touch.

Set up the drill by placing a tee in the green — this is your start point. Then place a coin 5m away and then another coin 3m behind the first coin. You will need four golf balls and your putter. Start by putting the first ball, trying to get it to finish in between the coins but not too far past the first coin. You are then trying to roll the second ball just past the first but not outside the coins. Then continue with the last two balls rolling each just past the previous but not past the last coin. You will have completed from 5m when you have managed to get all four balls to finish in the 3m area as well as rolling each ball past the previous ball. If you complete from 5m then move back to 6m and then 7m, and so on.

If you fail at any point you must go back to the 5m mark and start again. Keep a personalbest score and try to beat it each time you practise. Persevere with this drill and your medium length putting will improve out of sight. This drill is much more difficult than it sounds, believe me!
