Deakin looks to climb back up the rankings of universities

- NATALEE KERR

DEAKIN University has slipped in the world university rankings, with the latest data revealing a drop of four spots in 12 months.

It is now ranked equal 275 in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings for 2021, compared with its placing of 271 last year.

Despite the drop, Deakin still sits within the top 300 universities across the globe, and is up 105 places since 2014.

Deakin vice-chancellor Iain Martin said the university’s “strong position” in the rankings demonstrated its “proven commitment to excellence” through education and research.

“Rankings never tell the whole story but are an essential guide, and our progress in recent years shows we are on the right track,” Professor Martin said.

“Our future success will depend on our ability to create impacts that benefit the many communities we serve, helping them to navigate times of challenge and opportunity.”

The index ranks universities across six performance indicators, including academic reputation, citations and international outlook.

Deakin is ranked the fourth highest university in Victoria, sitting behind the University of Melbourne, ranked 41 globally, Monash University (55) and RMIT University (equal 223).

The Australian National University was the nation’s best-ranked university, coming in at equal No. 31.

According to the data, 23 Australian universities improved their positions, while 12 dropped in their rank.

Quacquarelli Symonds said the progress of Australia’s universities had been “hindered” by a deterioration of teacher capacity and graduate employability.
