HOONS DRIVING LOCALS AROUND THE BEND
RESIDENTS of a Corio street have voiced concerns about hoon drivers after an alleged drink-driver crashed into the fence of a health centre over the weekend.
The car ploughed into the fence of the City of Greater Geelong’s Corio Maternal and Child Health Centre on Hendy St just before 10.30pm on Saturday.
Police said a 25-year-old Tarneit man is expected to be charged on summons.
“The driver returned a positive result following a breath test,” police spokeswoman Creina O’Grady said.
“He is expected to be charged with drink-driving and other traffic offences.”
No one needed emergency care from paramedics after the crash.
Sue Gordon, who has lived on Hendy St for more than 30 years, described hearing revving and smashing sounds on the night of the incident, and said there were several men on the scene after the crash.
Mrs Gordon said hooning on the street had been “pretty bad” lately, and the community was concerned, especially given the amount of children in the area.
In addition to the maternal health centre, which is near the intersection of Rotella Ave, Hendy St is home to a campus of Northern Bay College and a preschool.
Mrs Gordon believes more measures to slow down drivers, such as potentially another speed hump and more signage, are needed on the 50km/h street.
Another Hendy St resident, Rosemary, who did not want her surname published, said she heard a noise when the car struck the fence on Saturday night.
“People do go up and down the street pretty quickly,” she said.
“They definitely go faster than 50km/h.”
In 2018, a review by City of Greater Geelong at a newly-implemented school zone on nearby Purnell Rd found the majority of motorists were not complying with changed speed limits.
