SCOTT Bennett has been appointed general manager of the Geelong Advertiser, taking over from Wayne Buttner, who has announced his retirement.

Mr Bennett has more than 15 years’ experience in the publishing and advertising industry, having worked in radio and newspaper sales, digital strategy, search engine and social media marketing and content development for brands.

He has been working at the Addy for almost four years, most recently working as group sales director SME and digital, and will take on his new role on August 1.

Mr Bennett, his wife Jess and children Henry and Sadie have lived in the Geelong region for the past five years.

“I am both humbled and excited to be taking on this new position,” he said.

“I’m extremely proud to be leading the Addy in its 180th year, anchored by the love and support that our region and partners have for our brand.”

His digital and all-round media experience will ensure the Addy continues its growth as a multi-platform voice for the community and its advertising partners.

Mr Buttner is retiring after more than four decades in metropolitan, regional and community newspapers, including 35 years with News Corp. He started as a journalist at the Bendigo Advertiser and, apart from two stints as general manager of the Addy, his career has included editorial and management roles in Darwin, Albury, Melbourne and Perth.

“It’s been a privilege to work with the team at the Addy, which continues to be the voice of Geelong,” he said.

“It’s a special publication and part of a very special community.”

His retirement plans include spending more time with his family, especially his six grandchildren, along with pursuing his passions of building, gardening and travel.

Michael Miller, executive chairman of News Corp Australasia, said Mr Buttner has had a distinguished career. “He has been a passionate advocate for the Geelong community through his leadership at the Addy,” he said.
