Note: This Q&A was completed in May Name: Matt McFarlane Age: 17 Sport: Golf School: Saint Ignatius College Main coach: Steve Brodie

How did you get into your sport? I started playing golf in primary school by playing in a junior regional golf tournament introduced from my primary school in Grade 5.

What do you love about it?

I love getting outside and getting to meet new people. The game challenges me and my abilities. Each course is different every time you play it.

What is a normal week of training like for you normally and what is it during the

COVID-19 period?

In a normal week I would practise up to four times and normally play two rounds a week. Now due to coronavirus I am not playing at all but have set up a practice net in my backyard, which I hit balls into. I have daily strengthening and conditioning training and have been doing that for the past five weeks.

What goals do you have for the rest of 2020?

My goals have changed since all of this coronavirus but hopefully we can get back to playing soon. Depending on what tournaments will be available to play, I am hoping to try and get a couple more wins before I turn 18 in October.

How has coronavirus impacted you? What are you most looking forward to doing once it is over?

The break has come for a good time for me as I have just recovered from a wrist injury. The break has allowed me to get back to normal for when we can start playing again.

What has been a positive aspect of this unusual situation?

I have had many positive aspects. If there was any good time to have an injury it would be now as I have been able to rest and recover without missing out on anything. I have also been able to work on strengthening my body and trying to get as fit as possible when I return to the course.

Who is your sporting inspiration?

I have always aspired to have Phil Mickelson’s short game as I believe it is one of the most important aspects of the game.
