No crowds at local footy

Only ‘necessary’ spectators allowed in

- TOBY PRIME

A FOOTBALL- HUNGRY public will be turned away from attending AFL Barwon’s modified competition and shortened junior season.

Under AFL Victoria guidelines released on Thursday, only necessary spectators would be permitted to attend games, which have a target date of August 1.

As part of AFL Victoria’s return-to-play protocols, “only spectators necessary to support participation should attend training and competitions”.

It is unclear who is deemed as “necessary”, but the inability for clubs to host a meaningful crowd is another blow for the modified competition.

It also states “no spectators (are allowed) on grounds during breaks or after the match”.

Any spectators must also be in groups of no more than 10 and keep 1.5m apart.

Clubs would be responsible for monitoring social distancing.

There is the hope restrictions will ease to the point where members of the public will be able to attend games.

The local junior season is set to start on July 18.

The announcement comes following the VAFA’s decision on Wednesday night to abandon the season, leaving the Southern league as the last senior competition left standing in Melbourne.

Many clubs, including St Joseph’s, Grovedale and Geelong

Amateur, withdrew from AFL Barwon’s proposed series this week. Among the reasons is that motivation from players is waning because of recent coronavirus setbacks. Clubs are also mindful of the burden placed on volunteers.

Players have also been instructed to not shake hands or give high fives and spectators are also encouraged to remain in their cars if the venue has vehicle access.

A number of hygiene measures are in place, including: SPITTING and clearing of nasal/respiratory secretions is not permitted; THOROUGHLY clean and disinfect facilities before player arrival; and,

CLUBS must ensure that frequently touched surfaces and objects are cleaned regularly when in use.
