Motorhome dump site dumped

- NATALEE KERR

THE Borough of Queenscliffe has backflipped on its plans to open a new motorhome dump point in Queenscliff following concerns from local residents.

The proposed free dump point on Hygeia Drive was set to allow travellers with selfcontained recreational vehicles to dispose of their waste in an “environmentally friendly” manner.

The council previously said the dump point would establish the borough as the new “motorhome travel destination” of the Bellarine Peninsula. But Mayor Ross Ebbels announced on Friday that the project, designed to encourage more caravanners to stop, shop and play in the region, would no longer go ahead in the proposed location.

“In the last week prior to opening the facility, council has met with a small number of nearby residents and has gained greater insight into concerns they have raised about the facility,” Cr Ebbels said. “At the request of councillors, the Borough of Queenscliffe will therefore not be opening the new facility at Hygeia Drive, and the facility will be removed in the coming months.”

The call comes after the council announced it was finishing construction on the caravan dump point last month.

It said it would continue to explore “alternative” locations for another dump point elsewhere in the borough that minimises impacts on local residents.

There are only a few publicly accessible dump points across the G21 region. The project was a funded partnership with the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia.
