Bail after alleged rampage

- RUSTY WOODGER

A MAN has faced court for allegedly going on a rampage at a Belmont shop this week after he was told his phone would need a repair.

Andrew Jeffkins, 25, was on four counts of bail when he allegedly assaulted an employee and used a bin to smash the shopfront of ITZ Computers on Monday afternoon.

Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard the Grovedale man entered the Francis St store about 3.30pm and requested help with his mobile phone.

Prosecutor Sergeant Peter Beard said Mr Jeffkins became agitated after being told his phone was damaged and needed to be repaired.

It is alleged he initially picked up a phone accessory and threw it across the room, before throwing a tub of accessories across the counter, striking a worker in the forehead.

Sergeant Beard said Mr Jeffkins then tried to gain entry to the rear of the store, but failed and walked outside. He returned and allegedly picked up a bin from across the road and twice launched it at a window, causing it to break.

He was arrested at his home and had since made full admissions to the offending, Sergeant Beard said.

Mr Jeffkins’ mother told the court her son was currently trying to get into a drug rehabilitation clinic.

The court heard Mr Jeffkins had also been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

Magistrate Simon Guthrie granted bail due to a number of factors, including his belief that Mr Jeffkins would have better access to treatment in the community.

Mr Jeffkins must abide by a curfew and not use illicit drugs while on bail.

He will return to court on August 4.
