Paid parking returns to CBD

- HARRISON TIPPET

PAID parking will return to parts of central Geelong from the start of August, while some areas will remain free until 2021.

The City of Greater Geelong announced on Thursday that while the CBD’s 2P zones will remain free until December 31, all other areas will have paid parking reintroduced on Monday, August 3.

The city’s new parking fees will also kick in on August 3, with casual on-street parking fees increasing by $0.10 to $3.10 per hour, all-day capped street parking rising from $5.80 to $6.40, and all-day spaces in the Haymarket car park increasing by $0.50 to $13.50.

The City is also preparing to resume its off-street permit parking system on the same date.

“The city centre has seen a lift in activity in recent weeks, but more support is needed for both small business and visitors,” acting mayor Kylie Grzybek said.

“The free parking in twohour zones provides further incentive for people to enjoy the variety of shopping, dining and cultural attractions in central Geelong and the Waterfront.

“There are an increasing number of entertainment options, with the Carousel joining the Geelong Gallery, National Wool Museum and Geelong library in reopening again.”
