Blanket approach to helping

- NATALEE KERR

A COMMUNITY service organisation has called on Geelong residents to dig deep so families doing it tough can stay warm.

Uniting’s Spread the Warmth this Winter appeal is calling for donations to help those sleeping rough or struggling to make ends meet.

Uniting Barwon senior manager Des Younghusband said the challenge to keep those most vulnerable in the community warm was even greater this year due to the effects of COVID-19.

“It’s a tough time of the year for vulnerable people, and the coronavirus pandemic is just adding another layer to that challenge,” he said.

“Our resources usually do not meet the need in a normal year, and with COVID-19, that is just going to make it tougher.”

The group is asking for donations of blankets, jackets, pyjamas and winter woollies, along with financial donations.

A $29 donation will help buy a new blanket, $100 will purchase pyjamas for a family of four, while $230 will help buy two swags to give to people sleeping rough.

Mr Younghusband said local Uniting service centres had already started to distribute items across the region.

“Being cold is not a comfortable way to be living,” he said. “As quickly as things come in, they go out because there is such a demand.” Donations can be made at centres in Grovedale, Norlane and Winchelsea daily between 9.30am and noon or online at unitingvictas.org.au
