Clubs kick around local comp idea

SOCCER clubs across Geelong have come together to discuss plans for a local competition to replace scuppered state leagues and NPL this year.

The COVID-19 lockdown in greater Melbourne has torpedoed plans for Victorian state competitions, leaving several Geelong clubs without a place to play.

A meeting between clubs this week floated the idea of a new competition to be held in Geelong to give senior players a chance to get on the pitch.

Clubs have until July 13 to opt into the new competition but details on exactly what the format would be are yet to be finalised. Barwon Soccer Club and North Geelong Warriors have already expressed their interest in taking part in the comptetion.

“We have to have the boys playing football, if we can organise some sort of competition that would be great,” Warriors director of football Josip Skoko said.

GEELONG will take momentum with it to Perth after sweeping the Brisbane Lions aside in a thirdquarter blitz at the SCG last night.

The Cats trailed by 22 points — and were without Quinton Narkle and Mitch Duncan with hamstring injuries — in the second quarter when the Lions looked to have the “home” side on the rack.

But it went from shaky to sharp by three-quarter time at the SCG, kicking 9.3 to 0.1 in an electric 30minute period to run out 27-point winners.

“The odds were against us and, to a man, we found a way to fight our way through it. Yeah, really proud of them,” coach Chris Scott said.

Scott said Narkle and Duncan would travel to Western Australia on Saturday.

“The initial feedback is they were quite minor,” he said. “Duncan was assessed for a long time. There was the real possibility that he could come back, so I think that’s a good sign. Narkle was a bit more obvious that he couldn’t come back.”

Gary Rohan was reported in the first term for a flimsy bump on Brandon Starcevich, but the dynamic forward might have more to worry about for a late hit on Ryan Lester minutes later.
